Dismantling the myth of learning to read and reading to learn

In the 1990s, members of the education community began connecting reading instruction with the phrase “in K-3 children are learning to read, and in 4-12 children are reading to learn.” In a recent ASCD Express article, educator Bonnie D. Houck and content specialist for reading Kari Ross refer to this statement as a myth and a disservice to children as they explain the negative effects it has had. Learn more.
