Citizenship Month: Poetry Stars

The Multilingual Department is working with the Mayor’s Office, and the University of Houston to highlight the diversity of the newcomer residents in Houston. Citizenship Month, an initiative of Mayor Annise Parker and the First Lady Kathy Hubbard, is celebrated during the month of November. This celebration provides an opportunity to reflect on the value of citizenship, and to focus on the privileges, rights, responsibilities and obligations of all citizens.

One of this year’s events planned was a poetry contest to highlight literacy development and the unique perspective of new arrival English Language Learners (ELL’s). Students from Las Americas Middle School, Fondren Middle School and Lee High School submitted poems for the contest. The awards ceremony was held on Nov. 7th at the Asia Society Center. The winners, read their poems and were presented an award by First Lady Kathy Hubbard.

We are proud to announce that our students did outstanding in the competition. Daniella Fuentes from Fondren Middle School,  Angie Bonilla of Las Americas Middle School, and Eman Keder from Lee High School were the selected winners of the poetry contest.

A special congratulations to their teachers Mr. Soverino of Las Americas, Mr. Reed of Lee High School and Mrs. Behazadi of Fondren Middle School.
