During the first two weeks of November, the Secondary division offered two 4-day Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) training sessions. These professional development opportunities offer teachers a unique approach to engage and accelerate students’ academic literacy and content knowledge.
Six program specialists conducted these trainings as part of the certification process to become QTEL trainers. The pedagogy utilized in these sessions was characterized by intensive workshops that follow principles of high expectations, sustained academic rigor, quality teacher and student interactions, and a focus on language and quality curricula, so ELLs effectively access grade-level content in their ESL/ELA and content area classrooms.
Sixty-seven HISD middle and high school teachers participated in this training, as well as, several Teacher Development Specialists and Curriculum Specialists.
